"Chicken Gumbo" by Lex & Joe is a nicely spiced bowl of blues delight. Lyrically clever and witty, this CD has a way of leaving a deeply etched impression. "Memphis Women and Chicken" is a groovy and humorous tune that flaunts some soulful saxophone runs. Moreover, the vocals on this CD deliver the best mix of sass, attitude, and humor. Adding to the diverse nature of this album is the inclusion of some pleasantly redone cover tracks. Furthermore, the musicianship on "Ophelia" really steals the limelight. Wrapped in top notched production, "Chicken Gumbo" is as delicious as it sounds. -Xavier and the RadioIndy.com Reviewer Team New year, new music: Mix Tape '08 By Ben Bulkeley Portsmouth Herald Spotlight Magazine January 03, 2008 6:00 AM Ahh, the New Year. The New Year always means a couple of things, and something different to everyone. There are the dieters, the hopeful ex-smokers, the self improvers, and the optimists and pessimists that hinge their hopes and fears on the upcoming 366 days (2008 is a leap year). For me, it's the destruction of documents, because I will write 2007 until July, at which point I will wonder where the year has gone. I will quit my New Year's resolution by the time the primaries are over. Stop eating fried food? Don't think so. Quit swearing? Don't #$@*&^% think so. Donate my time and energy to charity? Eh, maybe next year. Man, I love a New Year. v But one great way to start off the New Year is with new music. Consider making a mix-tape (is there a more modern term for this? When was the last mix-tape actually a tape? And I refuse to call something a "play-list") to begin the year. Gradually add tracks as the months tick by. v It's proven that smell is the best gateway to the memory, but I would add music as a close second. Almost everyone remembers where they were the first time they heard Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven," (8th grade dance for me) or what the adhesive on an envelope smells and tastes like. Despite the fact that no one has mailed anything since what? 1987? v But collecting songs as the months tick by is a great way to remember what you were feeling earlier in the year. v So, here are a few local bands to open up the Mixtape '08 with. Lex and Joe, "Chicken Gumbo," www.lexandjoe.com "Chicken Gumbo" is fun! Blues and funk have never seemed so natural as they do on this album. When listening, it was hard to keep a toe from a-tappin'. v The album features extensive brass and wind segments, that keep the songs fresh and fun. Check out the track "Deep Elem Blues." Gossip: By Jeanné McCartin Seacoast Online December 06, 2007 6:00 AM Lex, Joe and BB Last month Lex & Joe opened for BB King at the FM Kirby Center in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., Lex's hometown. "It was fantastic," says Lex Romane. "We have a brand-new CD and rolled it out that night." Earlier this week they played the mayoral inauguration in Biddeford, Maine. "You never know what gigs we're going to play," he adds laughing. The pair's new CD is "Chicken Gumbo," a mix of original and cover tunes. "It's blues-based like everything we've done, but this one is a little more rockin', some swing." ----- Original Message ----- From: Przemek Draheim To: Lex Romane Sent: Sunday, December 02, 2007 8:26 AM Subject: CD is here Dear Lex, The parcel you've sent me with Lex & Joe’s newest disc has reached me safe and sound, thank you very much! As soon as I’ve heard the opening track mixing blues and Dixieland horns I knew this CD won’t be something I hear everyday, not the same old thing. I was right as your disc brings together different shades of blues making the listening process so much fun. All is here: deep blues, a bit of soul, some jazz and even country styling making “Chicken Gumbo” very tasty. Your singing is good, arrangement’s are memorable and Joe’s horn and flute are like icing on a cake making this album perfect for repeated listening. Great stuff! It will be my pleasure to feature your music in my shows. I will keep you up to date with my playlists and Living Blues reports. Thank you again Lex for the music you've sent me!
